We asked alumni to share words of wisdom to graduating students

3 min read

Graduation is one of the biggest days of your life and many feel uncertainty on what's to come afterwards.

We asked ÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø graduates if there was a piece of advice they were given that influenced their next step or if there were any words of wisdom they wish they’d been offered.

We wanted to offer this real life advice to graduating students and give alumni the chance to make a difference to fellow ÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø graduates.

Here’s what they said:

Don’t panic after graduation that you don’t have any further plans. With the experience you’ve had you will know more about yourself and that will tailor where you are going, even if you don’t know where that is yet.

Rebecca Allyse Lawrence, BA (Hons) Drama and Performance, 2013

Kevin McLennan

BA (Hons) Business Studies, 2011

Remember in the real world you can fail, and it's a good thing as long as you learn from it. Now there's no grade to chase, create your own goals to achieve what success is to you.

Marie-Louise Tambyapin

BA (Hons) Media Studies, 2020

A piece of advice I was given: if you don’t wake up and genuinely feel happy about going into work, then you are in the wrong job. Having a job you enjoy doing will make your life better.

Bianca Nicholson

BSc (Hons) Psychology, 2016
MSc Criminology and Criminal Psychology, 2019

Keep an open mind, opportunities can come from the most unexpected places. Keep utilising the university services available. Never give up.

Stian Engeboe

BSc (Hons) Music and Sound Technology, 2019

Not knowing what you want to do upon graduating is okay. Take it day by day. It's a big world out there so remember to be gentle with yourself and most importantly believe in yourself. Don't worry about asking questions, even the silly ones, as it'll make the workplace a better place.

Paula Simpson

BA (Hons) Economics, 1987

There is no right or wrong path to take. Always enjoy what you do.

Graduation is one of the most amazing days of your life. The most powerful thing which you have right now is your degree, which no one can take away from you. Graduation is your first step in making a difference in people's lives. The strongest factor for success is believing in yourself, believing you deserve it and believing that you will get there no matter what happens.
